(Reader Beware! Huge Amount of Text coming. Trying to train my game design muscles)
I moved this post to a new thread because I though it had too many ideas to be so different from the OP. It would only split discussion. So read up if you haven't already I'd like to hear what people think. Feel free to ask questions and please challenge the ideas here.
I've always been a fan of building hybrid and having doing so a few years now. It is alot more fun but it is completely sub-optimal as compared to "whoring"(now declared as Heavying) a statistic.
We want to introduce a way to feel good about building hybrid besides feeling like a beautiful paragon of justice. We also want to help those who want to specialize in Ninjutsu since the weakness of Ninjutsu is what is bringing hybrids and Nin Heavy's down. The best way to do this is to continue to allow Heavy builds, but make it as rewarding for the player to use a hybrid build. We can accomplish this by adding utility and crowd control to ninjutsu.
Ninjutsu in general is in a pretty weak spot save for clan jutsu. Adding some crowd control would make it so a ninjutsu user could actually fight someone rather than having to resort to a hit and run playstyle. The plan is to add Crowd Control Scaling along with Damage scaling.
Here's an example that will include what I'm talking about.
(Reworked) Fuuton: Shinkuu Taigyoku:
Prerequisites: Fuuton Element, Level 3000, Talk to Danzo, 2000 Chakra
Effect: After a slight delay the user fires a 1x1 Ball of wind forward dealing 1.25x ninjutsu damage knocking the opponent back 1/2/3/4/5 spaces backward.
The Knockback effect is increase as you pass Ninjutsu Thresholds.
There are 5 Ninjutsu Threshholds. One unlocking at 0,5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 Ninjutsu points. In this example getting knocked back 1,2,3,4,5 spaces would be equivalent to the first, second, third, forth and fifth Thresholds respectively.
Here are some other jutsu examples showing different ways I've come up with in which Ninjutsu Thresholds can be used:
Chidori Eisou:
Prerequisites: Level 1000, Raiton Element Certain Number of Chidori Uses, 2,500 Chakra
Effect: Shoots a blade of lightning forward 1/2/3/4/5 spaces dealing .75x Ninjutsu + .75x Speed stunning the enemy for .5/1/1.5/2/2.5 seconds.
Katon Goukakyuu no Jutsu:
Prerequisites: Level 250, Katon Element, 500 Chakra
Effect: Locks the user in place for 3 seconds while channeling a large 3x3 fireball ahead of them dealing 1x Ninjutsu per second. ///Can activate verb
again to cancel early/Can activate verb again to cancel early
(even clan jutsu)
Sabaku Kyuu:
Prerequisites: Level 500, Sand Manipulator Clan, 500 chakra.
Effect: User throws a large amount of sand 5 spaces forward. If a target is struck they are tightly wrapped in sand dealing .5 ninjutsu damage and they are stunned for 1/1.5/2/2.5/3 seconds.
Alright so enough of that. Some of you may be wondering, "How the hell will that increase build variety?" Well I'm glad you asked! By locking away utility behind thresholds this we can increase general jutsu utility without giving those who don't specialize in ninjutsu too much power. While at the same time making ninjutsu users feel good about specializing in it by giving them more than just increased damage. But still leaving the option of whoring for maximum damage output.
So for someone like me I could aim for the 4th or 5th Ninjutsu opting more utility for less melee damage. My opponent could then still use a Heavy build and I would have to use my utility and ranged attacks to overcome his raw power.
An ex-Tai Heavy might really like a jutsu's effect at the 3rd Threshold so he'd be willing to spare the 10,000 stat points to get a good effect out of it. Maybe that extra 1 second stun is all he needs to fuck shit up.
All in all it adds alot more thinking in builds and increases the chance for build diversity. (Especially if we added Genjutsu and Speed Thresholds. [DEAR GOD THE OPTIONS!] But that'll be a topic for another day.) We are in desperate need of some variety.
Current Builds:
Hybrid: 20,000 Nin, 25,000 Tai
Uchiha: 10,000 Gen, 15,000 Tai, 20,000 Nin
Tai Heavy: 45,000 Tai
Nin Heavy: 45,000 Nin
Speed Heavy: 45,000 Speed
Kusarigama: 20,000 Speed. 25,000 Tai
The Wagarashi: 20,000 Nin, 20,000 Tai, 10,000 Stamina.(Leveling is a bitch.)
So take a few days. Read it over and lets discuss. It'd be alot of work but if we're aiming to make a truly good game I believe this is the direction to aim for.
