xD I always started w/ charmander in the first gen games and it didn't really make brock hard, just annoying because ember was only chipping off 5-10 hp instead of the 20-22 hp it did on wilds. Then they split special, and all hell broke loose for poor charmander.

Er...normally The Fire-Type was considered the "Hard Mode" of the First/Second Gen seeing as how the types never favored your during the Gym Battles (As Charmander you get a easy break in the 4th Gym I believe...w/e the Grass/Poison one is.) Water was considered Normal, and Grass was considered Easy. These are because of the type advantages you have over the Gym leaders. (Although when you have to go through the Hardest Gym, which is the Fire type 7th Gym, you are at a huge disadvantage) I think the (edit: Fire type) hard mode only applies to the first Gen. Cyndaquil could beat Faulkner and curb stomp the Azalea gym. Cyndaquil really doesn't come at a disadvantage until the 5th and 8th gym while Chikorita has a disadvantage against the 2nd, 4th, 7th and 8th gyms. Totodile has a disadvantage against the 2nd, 6th, and 8th gyms.

Chikorita's also weakened to flyings, so Gym 1 too.
The only way you can debate charmander being hard mode though, is the fact that neither geodude nor onix had Rock Throw or Magnitude like they do in the re-done games (firered/leafgreen). They didn't get those changed to early moves till gen 2 or 3. xD

Not sure if anyone still checks this thread, but I had an interesting find.
I found a Gothitelle on Route 9 in shaking grass. Why is this pertinent info? Because it had it's hidden ability, Shadow Tag, instead of Frisk. I though hidden abilities were only through event? It's possible that amongst the changes in B2W2 they added a low chance for you to find hidden ability pokemon in the wild (outside of events and HGs)
