I want to make my own cartoon and rather wait until I buy a bamboo tablet, I want to start getting basic stuff done, like characters, storyboard, etc. But for now, I have to get even more basic; first I have to learn how to color with a computer. So let me know what you guys think of this, I did this in GIMP with my laptop pad (sketched it first then took a picture with my phone):

Unfortunately, I don't know of a direction I want to go as far as story-wise, so any characters you see here is just me being random, trying to color lol.
Actually, you asking for me to draw stuff will help me out, so drawing him is a possibility. But I can't color yet, so using special effects like lightning may come out atrocious lol.

VERY loose sketch of real life people. Kinda had poor lighting which is a no-no for an artist. Eventhough it's a simple sketch, I'm pretty sure it could have been more complete had I had good lighting, but nonetheless: Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Ima make a new thread like "My Daily Sketchpad" or something for this thread title is not really suiting... Lately I've been doing a lot of gesture drawings and for those who donot know, they're concise drawings that uses mainly lines to capture and image. The gesture or dynamics of the action is what's most important so gesture drawings usually donot have much details. Since they're supposed to be concise, they're done in like 3 minnutes, but it depends on what you're capturing: So, this sketch right here, it'd be accurate to say, was done in about 5 minutes. I like it, but looking at it in the light I see that my lines were not straight in some areas as I wanted them to be, conveying an awkward shape lol (i.e top right of head, left side of face): Also, I do it without an eraser as to not get distracted with "perfection" Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I just got a wacom tablet (for real this time lol) and this is my first sketch. It's kind of difficult transitioning from paper/pencil, but I'll get used to it in due time: Uploaded with ImageShack.us...Don't mind the coloring, it is a sketch after all lol

Okay time for an art critique! I do suggest you continue to draw but take my words to heart and constantly have others look at your work.
~Go buy an art kit of graphite pencils ranges from 4b-4h buy plenty of HB pencils great middle tones of gray and light drawings for the beginning stages.
Before you focus on people because they are one of the hardest things to draw correctly, you must practice the basic of the basics, objects. Find 3-4 boxes or square/rectangular and cylinder objects and also have a good light source to draw constantly. This will help you with perspective and 1.2 and 3 point perspective. Honestly if anyone is interested in drawing/fine Art drawing need to somehow take a Drawing and perspective class. Everyone has problems with perspective that's why measuring, using plum lines and tools help vastly. Using a grid also helps when placing things on the page.
When shading I suggest taking your time, and definitely buys those ranges of pencils I suggested earlier, helps create a range of grays which you want on any drawing. I hope these tips will help you continue the path of the artist, message me if ya need any more advice.

No as in I should get graphite alphabetic pencils as shading tools, however, I cannot as of now, so when I do shade, I'm stuck with a normal pencil. Which is okay, at best I can try to simulate that same effect you get with the graphite pencils via pressure: Darkest areas I would press hardest on the pencil and gradually alleviate that pressure as I gradually move into the lighter areas. And yes as in every artist needs to practice perspective and shading a lot. Everything I'm doing as of now is with a tablet, and I haven't really found my forte on digital coloring, so I'm still experimenting with that, which is why you can see my general areas of shading, but they aren't really brought out as they should be due to inexperience (well actually, only the very first one). I'm an amateur in perspective drawing (in terms of environments) as of now, which is why I have to use a "grid" to it's fullest, which is so time consuming lol. Thanks for your comment/criticism, here's my perspective quickie: imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/perspective.png/There's a 2 pixel gaussian blur. (Forum Code messes with colors for some reason)

Noooooooo, the cursed tablet! I hope since you think your going focus on digital works, doesn't mean you shouldn't focus on traditional pencil and paper drawings. I'm in Animation (In college atm) and yes I do focus my time using digital 2-d and 3-d work, but there is a major focus on traditional drawing for a reason. You must have a clear understanding of actual objects first before you can even think about creating them in the digital realm.
As for the grid you showed me, there are things off about it, that didn't work in the piece.
1.The measuring needs a bit of work, you should first use a half inch to 1 inch around the whole box first then plot a point in the center of the box then connect each half inch maker around the box to that center point.
2. I was looking at the guides you made and when you create the vertical and horizontal lines, then need to start off large and become smaller and smaller the further you go down into the center of the page. Rule of thumb, objests looks detail the further back (Center) of the page you go. I say this because of the black sidewalk/blocks, they are off.
I'm just going to point out some things that need work on. The first building on the right, you tried to create a 3-d effect there, but it looks like it's continuing, not sure if you wanted that but it does confuse me.
Another with that same building would be the white window, it doesn't at the top of it angle towards the center of the page like the building did.
The two black sidewalks, they aren't even in size and consistency. Working on your grind more will solve this problem for sure. That goes for the same with the stairs on the right, it doesn't look believable nor angles right.
There are more examples like these in the piece, but these stuck out the most. Hope you don't think I'm being a hard ass or anything like that, just hope to help you understand it all. Artistry hoooooooooooooo!

Definitely not being an ass, perhaps to the untrained eye, but I understand how crucial art can be. Though, with all said, I was hoping you'd let me get away with this imperfect piece as it is notable that I was not going for precision. Some of the educational information that you've shared with me, I am aware of (though they may not have shown within the piece, but how could you know): for example, should I make a cube, each one of the end-points should be tailed by an imaginary line that points back to the vanishing point to assume proper perspective.
Of course, as a major in Art, your artistic knowledge expands that of my own for I am a major in Computer Science, so your comment/criticism is always encouraged. I ask that you visit this topic more frequently and drop in your two-cents, thank you.
